The best dog shampoo in India depends on the job. For ticks and fleas, India’s top seller is Himalaya Erina-EP. For itchy, dry skin, an oatmeal shampoo such as Virbac Episoothe. For skin infections, only the medicated shampoo your vet prescribes. But for the bath your dog actually gets most often, the regular wash, you want a mild, sulphate-free, pH-balanced shampoo that is kind to the skin over years of use. That is the job most lists skip, and it is the one we care about most.
How we put this list together: we started from the public best-seller lists on Amazon.in (Dog Shampoos) and Supertails, checked on 18 October 2026, and grouped the popular shampoos by the job each is made for. We describe each one by what its own label and listing say; we did not lab-test other brands.

How we chose these shampoos
We started with what Indian pet parents actually buy: the top 30 dog shampoos on Amazon.in’s best-seller list and the top sellers in Supertails’ dog shampoo collection. Then we grouped them by the job they are made for and picked the clearest, most-reviewed option in each group. For every pick we looked at:
- Purpose. Is it a routine shampoo, a tick shampoo, a soothing shampoo or a medicated one? Most problems start when the wrong type is used for the wrong job.
- Formula. The cleansers it uses, how it is preserved, what fragrance it carries and whether it says pH-balanced. For a shampoo used every few weeks for years, this matters more than anything on the front label.
- Transparency. Whether you can find out what is actually in the bottle.
- Evidence of real use. Best-seller rank and the number of ratings, which tell you how many dogs it has been used on.
One thing stood out on Supertails: most of its top sellers are medicated shampoos with ketoconazole, chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide. These are good products, but they are made to manage diagnosed skin conditions, not for routine baths. We cover them separately below.
Ratings tell you what sells. The label tells you what’s inside. A shampoo with thousands of five-star ratings tells you many people bought it and liked how it smelled or felt that day. It doesn’t tell you what it leaves on your dog’s skin week after week. So for every pick, we read the label as well as the reviews, and that is where the real differences show up.
1. Best tick and flea shampoo: Himalaya Erina-EP
The No. 1 dog shampoo on Amazon.in, with more than 5,300 ratings (4.3 stars). It is sold as a tick and flea control shampoo for dogs and cats, with neem and eucalyptus, in 200 ml and 450 ml bottles.
Keep in mind: a shampoo washes off. It helps on bath day, but ongoing tick protection in India usually needs a vet-recommended preventive. It is also made for a job, not for every bath. Read our guide to ticks, fleas and the Indian dog.
2. Most-reviewed oatmeal shampoo: Wahl Oatmeal Shampoo
Wahl’s Oatmeal Shampoo in Coconut Lime Verbena has the most ratings of any dog shampoo on Amazon.in: over 36,000, at 4.4 stars. Oatmeal is a classic soothing ingredient for dry coats. Wahl’s 4-in-1 Lavender Chamomile (28,000+ ratings) is a popular alternative if you want shampoo and conditioner in one.
3. Best for everyday baths and sensitive skin: Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo
Tick shampoos, soothing shampoos and medicated shampoos each do a job. Gentle Daily Shampoo is made for the bath that has no special job: the regular wash your dog gets a dozen or more times a year, for its whole life. That is the bath where a gentle formula matters most, because whatever is in it touches the skin again and again. What the carton says:
- Cleansed with amino acids. Amino acid-derived surfactants clean without the squeaky, stripped feel of harsher cleansers.
- Preserved with probiotics, with no parabens, no MIT and no synthetic preservatives.
- Sensitive-skin formulation, pH-balanced and vet consulted.
- 99.5% natural origin (ISO 16128-2).
- No synthetic fragrance. The scent is IFRA-compliant, stays close to the coat and lasts up to 48 hours.
- For dogs and cats, so one bottle works for a mixed home.
- Three scents: Santal & White Tea (warm and woody), Fig & Neroli (bright and fresh) and Violet Leaf & Muslin (the softest).
Good to know: it lathers less than you may be used to, because it has no harsh foaming agents. The carton recommends two passes: the first lifts dirt, the second cleans the skin. It is a routine shampoo, not a tick or medicated one, and it isn’t the cheapest bottle you’ll find: amino acid cleansers and probiotic preservation cost more to make than conventional ones.
Best for: dogs bathed often, dogs with sensitive skin, homes with both dogs and cats, and owners who want a mild scent instead of a heavy perfume.

4. Best for itchy, dry skin: Virbac Episoothe
One of the few shampoos that ranks on both Amazon.in and Supertails. Episoothe is an oatmeal-based soothing shampoo for dogs and cats from an animal-health company, often suggested for dry, itchy skin.
Keep in mind: itching that comes back, redness, hair loss or sores need a vet visit, not just a new shampoo. See why is my dog licking its paws and dog dandruff and dry skin.
5. Best for large-breed homes: Pil Neem Plus Herbal Pet Shampoo
At No. 2 on Amazon.in with over 3,000 ratings, this neem shampoo comes in a 1 litre bottle. The listing describes it as pH-balanced, puppy-safe and for regular use, which makes it a practical choice for large breeds and multi-dog homes where volume matters most.
6. Routine neem shampoo: Himalaya Erina Coat Cleanser
Erina-EP’s everyday sibling sits at No. 4 with more than 3,100 ratings. It is made for routine bathing and skin hygiene, with neem, in a 450 ml bottle.
7. Best for long coats and tangles: Foodie Puppies Oh My Dog Detangling Shampoo
For Shih Tzus, Lhasas, Golden Retrievers and other long-coated breeds, this 500 ml detangling shampoo (No. 8, about 1,200 ratings) is paraben-free and made for smoother, less knotty fur. Brush out mats before the bath; water tightens them. Our Shih Tzu grooming guide has the full routine.
8. Neem-based tick shampoo: Dogz & Dudez Natural Neem
With more than 4,200 ratings, this 200 ml neem and lemongrass shampoo (No. 13) is popular with owners who want a plant-based tick shampoo. The listing says paraben-free and pH-balanced. As with any tick shampoo, pair it with a proper preventive.
9. Best for heavy shedding: Hug & Wag Shed Control Shampoo
Labradors, German Shepherds and Huskies shed hard twice a year. Hug & Wag’s Shed Control shampoo (225 ml, No. 16) is a bhringraj-based formula with wheat germ oil, argan oil and aloe vera, made for shedding coats. Wahl’s Shed Control in Lemongrass Sage (3,600+ ratings) is the most-reviewed alternative. No shampoo stops normal shedding; what helps most is brushing. Read dog hair fall vs shedding to tell the two apart.
10. Best waterless shampoo: HUFT Waterless Cleansing Dry Shampoo
For between-bath clean-ups, travel or dogs who hate the tub, a no-rinse shampoo is the easiest fix. HUFT’s 140 ml waterless spray (4.4 stars) is the best-rated dry shampoo on Amazon’s list, and Moe Puppy’s waterless shampoo is another popular option.
Also worth a look: Furrytail Dry Foam Shampoo is a no-rinse foam for dogs and cats in Hinoki & Bamboo, probiotic-preserved. See dry bath vs wet bath for when to use each, and our best dry shampoo for dogs review for more waterless options.
What about medicated shampoos?
Shampoos such as Virbac Ketochlor, Intas Conaseb, Intas Micodin and Petcare Petben are among the best sellers on Supertails. They contain antifungal or antibacterial actives like ketoconazole, chlorhexidine, miconazole or benzoyl peroxide, and they are made to manage fungal, bacterial or seborrhoeic skin problems.
Use them only when your vet has diagnosed the problem and tells you how often and how long. Used for routine baths, they can dry out healthy skin, and they won’t fix an itch that has a different cause, such as allergies or mites.
Which type of shampoo does your dog need?
| If your dog... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Is healthy and gets a regular bath | A mild, sulphate-free, pH-balanced daily shampoo |
| Has sensitive or easily irritated skin | A sensitive-skin formula with no synthetic fragrance; patch-test first |
| Picks up ticks on walks | A tick shampoo on bath day, plus a vet-recommended preventive |
| Has dry, itchy or flaky skin | An oatmeal or soothing shampoo; see a vet if it persists |
| Has a diagnosed skin infection | Only the medicated shampoo your vet prescribes |
| Has a long or tangly coat | A detangling or conditioning shampoo, after brushing |
| Is a puppy | A mild shampoo labelled for puppies; check the minimum age |
| Hates baths or needs a quick clean | A no-rinse dry shampoo between full baths |
Our full checklist is in how to choose a dog shampoo.
Common shampoo mistakes Indian pet parents make
- Using a tick or medicated shampoo for every bath. Save them for their job and use a gentle shampoo the rest of the time.
- Bathing too often with a harsh shampoo. Most dogs need a bath every few weeks, not every few days. Read how often should you bathe your dog.
- Not rinsing fully. Leftover shampoo is a common cause of itching after baths.
- Leaving the coat damp. In humid Indian weather a damp undercoat smells and can lead to skin problems. Here is how to dry a dog after a bath.
- Changing shampoos to fix a skin problem. If the itching, redness or hair loss doesn’t settle, see a vet.
- Using human shampoo. It is made for a different skin pH. See can I use human shampoo on my dog.
Our verdict: the one shampoo we’d keep at home
Most dogs don’t need five shampoos. They need one gentle shampoo for the regular bath, and the occasional specialist (a tick shampoo in the monsoon, a medicated one if the vet prescribes it) for a specific job.
So the question that matters is: which shampoo is best for the bath your dog gets most often? That is the shampoo whose ingredients meet your dog’s skin a dozen or more times a year, and it is where the formula matters more than the front label. Here is what we’d look for, and how Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo measures up:
| What to look for | Why it matters | Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle cleansers | Clean without stripping the skin’s natural oils | Amino acid-derived surfactants, no sulphates |
| pH-balanced for pets | Dog skin is not human skin | pH-balanced, sensitive-skin formulation |
| Kind preservation | The preservative stays on the skin until rinsed | Probiotic preserved; no parabens, MIT or synthetic preservatives |
| Fragrance that respects a dog’s nose | Dogs smell far more than we do | No synthetic fragrance; IFRA-compliant, skin-close scent |
| A full ingredient story | You should know what you’re using | 99.5% natural origin (ISO 16128-2), INCI on the carton |
| Safe for the whole home | Many Indian homes have dogs and cats | Made for dogs and cats; vet consulted |
Plenty of shampoos on this list sell more. But read the labels side by side and Gentle Daily is the one built to tick every line of this checklist, with the full ingredient list on the carton so you can check it yourself. If you want one bottle for regular baths, Gentle Daily Shampoo is the one we’d choose. Keep a tick shampoo for tick season and your vet’s prescription for skin problems, and you are covered.
