The best shampoo for a Shih Tzu in India is a mild, pH-balanced, low-fragrance shampoo that cleans a long, fine coat without stripping it, because a Shih Tzu needs bathing more often than most dogs. For tangles, a detangling formula such as Foodie Puppies Oh My Dog, the most-reviewed long-coat shampoo on Amazon.in. For Shih Tzu puppies, a puppy-specific shampoo such as Himalaya Erina Puppy. For frequent baths and sensitive skin, a gentle everyday shampoo with no synthetic fragrance.
How we put this list together: we looked at the top results for “shampoo for shih tzu” on Amazon.in, checked on 18 October 2026, and grouped the popular shampoos by what a Shih Tzu actually needs. We describe each one by what its own label and listing say; we did not lab-test any of them.

What makes a Shih Tzu’s coat different
- Long, fine hair that keeps growing. It tangles and mats easily, especially behind the ears, under the legs and on the belly.
- Frequent baths. Most Shih Tzus are bathed every three to four weeks, far more often than a Labrador or German Shepherd. A harsh shampoo used that often dries the skin.
- Sensitive skin. Many Shih Tzus are prone to itchy, dry or irritated skin.
- A face close to everything. Shampoo near the eyes and the folds of the face needs to be mild, and tear stains need gentle cleaning.
- A nose that sits in its own coat. Heavy perfume is hard to escape for a flat-faced dog.
So for a Shih Tzu, “best” means gentle enough to use every few weeks, conditioning enough for long hair, and mild on the nose.
Ratings tell you what sells. The label tells you what’s inside.
A shampoo with thousands of ratings tells you many people bought it. It doesn’t tell you what a Shih Tzu’s skin will meet a dozen or more times a year. That is on the label: the cleansers, the preservative and the fragrance. So for every pick, we read the label as well as the reviews.
1. Best for tangles: Foodie Puppies Oh My Dog Detangling Shampoo
With more than 1,100 ratings, this 500 ml detangling shampoo is the most-reviewed long-coat shampoo in the Shih Tzu results on Amazon.in. It is paraben-free and made for a shiny, soft, tangle-free coat.
2. Best for silky long coats: Forbis Long Coat Aloe Shampoo
A 750 ml aloe shampoo made specifically for long-coated dogs, with more than 1,000 ratings at 4.3 stars.
3. Best for frequent baths and sensitive skin: Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo
A Shih Tzu gets more baths than almost any other breed, so the shampoo matters more than the brand of brush. Gentle Daily Shampoo is made for exactly that: a regular wash that is gentle enough to repeat every few weeks without drying the skin or leaving a heavy perfume on a dog whose nose is always in its own coat. What the carton says:
- Cleansed with amino acids. Amino acid-derived surfactants clean without stripping the coat’s natural oils.
- Sensitive-skin formulation, pH-balanced and vet consulted.
- No synthetic fragrance. The scent is IFRA-compliant and stays close to the coat.
- Preserved with probiotics, with no parabens, no MIT and no synthetic preservatives.
- 99.5% natural origin (ISO 16128-2), with the full ingredient list on the carton.
- Scents for a Shih Tzu: Violet Leaf & Muslin, the softest, or Fig & Neroli, the freshest.
Good to know: it lathers less than you may expect, so the carton recommends two passes. On a long coat, work it in gently in the direction of the hair rather than scrubbing in circles, which causes tangles. For puppies, use it from 12 weeks; ask your vet about younger puppies.
Best for: adult Shih Tzus bathed every few weeks, Shih Tzus with sensitive skin, and homes that want a mild scent.
4. Best for Shih Tzu puppies: Himalaya Erina Puppy Shampoo & Conditioner
A 200 ml puppy shampoo and conditioner from Himalaya with more than 800 ratings. Check the minimum age on the label and keep first baths short and warm. Our puppy first bath guide explains how.
5. Shampoo and conditioner in one: Wahl 4-in-1 Lavender Chamomile
With more than 28,000 ratings, Wahl’s 4-in-1 is one of the most-reviewed dog shampoos in India. It cleans, conditions, detangles and moisturises in one step, which saves time on a long coat.
6. Named for Shih Tzus: HUFT 4-in-1 Dog Shampoo & Conditioner
Heads Up For Tails’ Honeysuckle & Chamomile shampoo and conditioner is labelled for dogs over 12 weeks and names Shih Tzus on the listing. Rated 4.4 stars.

7. Tear-free for the face: Bio-Groom Fluffy Puppy
A tear-free shampoo for sensitive skin and delicate coats, free of parabens and artificial thickeners, rated 4.5 stars. Useful around a Shih Tzu’s face, though you should still keep shampoo out of the eyes.
8. For damaged or brittle coats: Moe Puppy Keratin+ Protein Shampoo
A keratin and protein shampoo for dogs and cats with more than 380 ratings. The listing describes it as repairing and strengthening damaged fur.
9. Ultra-mild: Hug & Wag Tearless Shihtzu & Puppy Shampoo
A 225 ml ultra-mild, tearless shampoo with calendula and olive oil, made for Shih Tzus and puppies. It is rated 4.8 stars, though from only a handful of reviews so far.
10. Between baths: Moe Puppy Waterless Dry Shampoo
A 150 ml waterless shampoo for dogs and cats with more than 360 ratings, handy for freshening a Shih Tzu between full baths. Furrytail Dry Foam Shampoo is a no-rinse foam with no synthetic fragrance that does the same job. See our best dry shampoo review.
How to bathe a Shih Tzu without causing mats
- Brush out every tangle first. Water tightens mats, so a matted coat should be brushed or cut out before the bath.
- Use lukewarm water and wet the coat right down to the skin.
- Work the shampoo in the direction of the hair, not in circles. Two gentle passes are better than one hard scrub.
- Wash the face last, with a damp cloth, and keep water out of the eyes and ears.
- Rinse until the water runs clear. Leftover shampoo is a common cause of itching.
- Dry thoroughly. A damp undercoat smells and can irritate the skin. Blot with a towel, then dry on a cool or low setting while brushing. See how to dry a dog after a bath.

Our verdict: the shampoo we’d use on a Shih Tzu
The detangling and long-coat shampoos at the top of this list are popular for good reason. But the shampoo that matters most for a Shih Tzu is the one you’ll use every three or four weeks for its whole life, and that makes gentleness the first test.
Here is the checklist we’d use, and how Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo measures up:
| What to look for | Why it matters for a Shih Tzu | Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle cleansers | Frequent baths dry the skin if the cleanser is harsh | Amino acid-derived surfactants, no sulphates |
| pH-balanced, sensitive-skin | Many Shih Tzus have sensitive skin | pH-balanced, sensitive-skin formulation |
| No synthetic fragrance | A flat face lives close to its own coat | No synthetic fragrance; IFRA-compliant, skin-close scent |
| Kind preservation | Used a dozen or more times a year | Probiotic preserved; no parabens, MIT or synthetic preservatives |
| A full ingredient list | You should know what you use that often | 99.5% natural origin, INCI on the carton |
| Vet input | A breed with skin and eye sensitivities | Vet consulted |
The long-coat favourites win on reviews. But read the labels side by side, and Gentle Daily is the one built to tick every line of this checklist. For a Shih Tzu’s regular bath, Gentle Daily Shampoo in Violet Leaf & Muslin is the one we’d choose.
