Say “violet” and most people think of something sweet and powdery: old-fashioned sweets, a grandmother’s handkerchief. That is the flower. Our scent is built on the leaf, which is a different thing entirely.
Violet Leaf & Muslin is the softest of our three shampoo fragrances. Here is what each note is and why we put them together.
Violet leaf is green, not sweet
The sweet violet plant, Viola odorata, gives perfumers two very different materials. The flower smells powdery and sweet. The leaf smells green: fresh-cut stems, cucumber skin, wet earth after rain, with only a faint floral echo of the flower.
That green freshness is what we wanted. It feels clean without being sharp, and it does not have the cloying sweetness that makes some floral pet shampoos feel heavy on a coat.
On our carton the leaf appears as Viola Odorata Leaf Extract. If a label says “violet” and you want to know whether it means the leaf, the flower or a synthetic aroma chemical, the INCI list is the place to check.
What does muslin bring?
Muslin is the fine, breathable cotton cloth that has been woven in India for centuries, famously in Dhaka and Bengal. As a scent idea it stands for what that cloth feels like: soft, clean, air-dried, a little warm from the sun.
In the shampoo it appears on the carton as Muslin Essential Oil. It rounds off the green of the violet leaf and gives the fragrance its calm, skin-close finish – the part you notice when your dog has dried and settled.

How it smells on your dog or cat
In the bath you get the green first – cool, leafy, almost watery. As the coat dries it softens into something closer to clean cotton. It is IFRA-compliant, contains no synthetic fragrance and stays close to the coat for up to 48 hours.
This is the scent for people who don’t want their pet to “smell of perfume” at all. It smells like a clean animal on a clean sofa.
Who it suits
- Homes that prefer quiet scents. If strong fragrances give you a headache, start here.
- Cats and dogs who share a sofa. The Gentle Daily Shampoo is made for dogs and cats, and a soft scent suits a shared, nose-height life.
- Small, close-to-you breeds. Lap dogs live at nose height. A soft fragrance makes sense.
- Winter. Its clean-cotton warmth suits cold months and closed windows.
Same formula, different scent
Violet Leaf & Muslin is one of three Gentle Daily Shampoos, and only the fragrance changes between them. Each one is cleansed with amino acid-derived surfactants instead of sulphates, preserved with probiotics instead of parabens or MIT, pH-balanced for sensitive skin and 99.5% natural origin (ISO 16128-2).
Colloidal oatmeal, aloe vera and vegetable glycerin soothe and hydrate; a guar conditioner with camellia oil and vitamin E leaves the coat softer. Expect gentle lather, and give it two passes. Our step-by-step bath guide walks through the whole ritual.
Choosing between our three scents
