The Paw Cleaner is the product you use most often – after every walk, in every season. So its scent mattered more than any other. It had to be fresh, never cloying, and pleasant to a dog whose nose is a few centimetres from the foam. We chose spearmint and sea salt.
Spearmint, not peppermint
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) and peppermint (Mentha × piperita) are close relatives, but they smell and feel different. Peppermint is rich in menthol: sharp, icy, almost medicinal. Spearmint’s main aroma compound is carvone, which gives it a softer, sweeter, greener scent – the mint of chewing gum and fresh chutney rather than of throat lozenges.
That softness is why we chose it. It gives the foam a naturally cooling, deodorising finish without the sharp edge. On our carton it appears as Mentha Spicata Herb Oil.
What sea salt and baking soda do
The “sea salt” in the name is Sodium Chloride on the carton, and it works with Sodium Bicarbonate – baking soda. Baking soda is a familiar household deodoriser: it helps neutralise the slightly sour smell that builds up on paws. Together they give the foam its clean, mineral freshness, a little like sea air.

Why do dog paws smell at all?
Many owners notice that their dog’s paws smell faintly of corn chips or popcorn. That is common, and usually comes from the yeast and bacteria that naturally live on skin, especially in the warm, slightly damp spaces between the pads. Sweat glands in the paw pads add to it.
Add what a city walk leaves behind – construction dust, road residue, monsoon puddles – and paws can carry a lot into the house. A strong, sudden or unpleasant smell, redness, swelling or constant licking is different: that needs a vet, not a cleaner. Our guide to why dogs lick their paws explains when to worry.
Built to be licked
Dogs lick their paws. Anything you put on them, they will taste. So the Paw Cleaner is formulated without anything unsafe if licked: no synthetic surfactants, parabens, MIT or synthetic fragrance. It is cleansed with amino acid surfactants, preserved with probiotics, and soothed with aloe vera, oat extract, calendula, witch hazel water, panthenol and allantoin.
The thirty-second ritual
Pump a small amount onto each paw or onto a damp cloth. Massage gently across each pad and between the toes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth or towel. No rinsing. Dry well between the toes, especially in the monsoon. Our full after-walk paw care guide covers the rest.
Make it a set: Defense before the walk, the Paw Cleaner after, and Refreshing Mist to finish, in the Walk Ritual Kit. Or pair it with the Mist in the After-Walk Duo.
