The best cat shampoo in India is one that is made for cats, mild, pH-balanced and lightly scented, because a cat will lick off whatever stays on its coat and smells far more than we do. For white coats, a brightening shampoo such as Zoivane Extra White or Bio-Groom Purrfect White. For Persians and long hair, a conditioning, detangling formula. For itchy skin, a soothing oatmeal shampoo such as Virbac Episoothe. For cats who hate water, a waterless foam. And for a gentle everyday wash in a home with cats and dogs, a shampoo made for both, with no synthetic fragrance.
How we put this list together: we looked at the top results for “cat shampoo” on Amazon.in, checked on 18 October 2026, and grouped the popular shampoos by the job each is made for. We describe each one by what its own label and listing say; we did not lab-test any of them.

Does your cat even need a bath?
Most healthy short-haired cats keep themselves clean and rarely, if ever, need a bath. A shampoo is worth having when:
- your cat has long hair, like a Persian or Maine Coon, and the coat gets greasy or matted
- your cat is older, overweight or unwell and can’t groom properly
- your cat has got into something sticky, oily or smelly
- your vet has recommended a medicated or soothing shampoo for a skin problem
Our guide can you bathe a cat? walks through when and how, and our Persian cat grooming guide covers long coats in detail.
Ratings tell you what sells. The label tells you what’s inside.
Cats spend hours a day licking their coats, so whatever shampoo isn’t rinsed away ends up being groomed off. A shampoo with thousands of ratings tells you many people bought it; it doesn’t tell you what your cat will be grooming off afterwards. That’s on the label: the cleansers, the preservative, the fragrance, and whether it is made for cats at all. So for every pick, we read the label as well as the reviews.
1. Most reviewed cat shampoo: Zoivane 5 in 1 Extra White Cat Shampoo
With more than 1,000 ratings, Zoivane’s Extra White is the most-reviewed cat-specific shampoo on Amazon.in. It is a 200 ml shampoo with conditioner, and the listing describes it as brightening for white and light coats, for Persians, kittens and all breeds.
2. Best for white and light coats: Bio-Groom Purrfect White Cat Shampoo
An imported conditioning shampoo for white and light-coated cats and kittens, with more than 370 ratings. The listing describes it as tear-free, sulphate-free and pH-balanced.
3. Best gentle everyday wash for cats and dogs: Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo
Most cat shampoos are made for a specific problem: a yellowing white coat, mats, itching. Gentle Daily Shampoo is made for the bath that has no problem to fix, just a coat that needs cleaning, and for the many Indian homes where cats and dogs share one bathroom shelf. It is a 250 ml shampoo made for both cats and dogs, built around the things a cat’s skin and nose care about most. What the carton says:
- Cleansed with amino acids. Amino acid-derived surfactants clean without stripping the coat’s natural oils.
- Sensitive-skin formulation, pH-balanced and vet consulted.
- No synthetic fragrance. The scent is IFRA-compliant and stays close to the coat.
- Preserved with probiotics, with no parabens, no MIT and no synthetic preservatives.
- 99.5% natural origin (ISO 16128-2), with the full ingredient list on the carton.
- Three scents. For cats, we’d choose Violet Leaf & Muslin, the softest and most skin-close of the three.
Good to know: it lathers less than you may expect, because it has no harsh foaming agents. As with any shampoo, rinse until the water runs clear; with cats, that matters more than with any other pet.
Best for: routine baths for long-haired and older cats, cats with sensitive skin, and homes with both cats and dogs.
4. Best for soft, glossy coats: Beaphar Cat Shampoo
From a long-established European pet-care brand, Beaphar’s 250 ml herbal cat shampoo has more than 260 ratings and is made with macadamia oil and aloe vera for a soft, glossy coat.
5. Shine on a budget: Zoivane Smooth & Shine Cat Shampoo
Zoivane’s everyday shampoo for all cat types has more than 300 ratings and is made for a nourished, shiny coat.
6. Best for Persians and long hair: Hug & Wag 4-in-1 Persian Cat Shampoo
A 225 ml long-hair formula with hyaluronic acid and macadamia oil. The listing describes it as anti-matting, hydrating and safe around tear stains. Comb out mats before the bath; water tightens them.

7. Extra gentle conditioning: Lozalo Botanical Conditioning Cat Shampoo
An extra-gentle conditioning shampoo for cats with calendula extract, paraben-free, rated 4.6 stars, in 250 ml and 500 ml bottles.
8. Best for itchy, dry skin: Virbac Episoothe
An oatmeal-based soothing shampoo for dogs and cats from Virbac, rated 4.5 stars on Amazon.in. It is often suggested for dry, itchy skin. Itching that keeps coming back, scabs or hair loss need a vet, not just a new shampoo.
9. Best for cats who hate water: Natural Remedies Fresh Me Up
A waterless foam cleanser for dogs, cats and pups with more than 1,000 ratings. For many cats, a foam you massage in by hand is far less stressful than a tub.
Furrytail Dry Foam Shampoo is another waterless option made for cats and dogs: a no-rinse foam in Hinoki & Bamboo with no synthetic fragrance that dries in 60–90 seconds. See our best dry shampoo for cats review for more.
10. Multi-cat homes: Bscly Meow Cat Shampoo
A 1 litre cat shampoo for Persians, kittens and short-haired cats with oatmeal extract and coconut oil, practical for homes with several cats.
What never to use on a cat
- Dog tick and flea shampoos or sprays, unless the label says they are for cats. Some dog products contain permethrin, which is highly toxic to cats. See the best anti-tick sprays for more.
- Human shampoo, including baby shampoo. It is made for a different skin pH.
- Dish soap or home remedies. They strip the coat and are hard to rinse out.
- Medicated shampoos without your vet’s advice.
How to bathe a cat without a battle
- Trim nails and brush first the day before; comb out mats.
- Prepare everything before you bring the cat in: shampoo, jug, towels, a non-slip mat.
- Use lukewarm water in a basin, a few centimetres deep, never a running tap over the head.
- Wet the body only, keeping water away from the face and ears. Clean the face with a damp cloth.
- Lather gently, then rinse thoroughly. Rinse until the water runs clear; leftover shampoo is what a cat licks off.
- Towel dry in a warm room. Use a dryer only on low and only if your cat accepts it.
- Reward with treats and calm attention.
Our verdict: the cat shampoo we’d keep on the shelf
The cat shampoos that sell most are built for one job, like brightening a white coat. That’s useful if you need it. But for most cats, the shampoo that matters is the one you’ll reach for on the occasional ordinary bath day, and for a cat, “best” means gentle above everything else. A cat licks its coat for hours after a bath and has a nose far more sensitive than ours.
Here is the checklist we’d use, and how Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo measures up:
| What to look for | Why it matters | Furrytail Gentle Daily Shampoo |
|---|---|---|
| Made for cats | Not every pet shampoo is | Made for cats and dogs; vet consulted |
| Gentle cleansers | Cats’ skin is delicate | Amino acid-derived surfactants, no sulphates |
| pH-balanced | A cat’s skin is not human skin | pH-balanced, sensitive-skin formulation |
| No synthetic fragrance | A cat’s nose is far more sensitive than ours | No synthetic fragrance; IFRA-compliant, skin-close scent |
| Kind preservation | Whatever isn’t rinsed off gets groomed off | Probiotic preserved; no parabens, MIT or synthetic preservatives |
| A full ingredient list | You should know what your cat grooms off | 99.5% natural origin, INCI on the carton |
The best-selling cat shampoos win on reviews, and they earn them for the jobs they do. But read the labels side by side, and Gentle Daily is the one built to tick every line of this checklist. For an ordinary bath day, Gentle Daily Shampoo in Violet Leaf & Muslin is the one we’d choose, and for cats who won’t go near water, Dry Foam Shampoo.
